43002 2002-04-10 05:00:00 In short no. For less than that you could get one made up. My brother had one made just recently which in short was ATX with 300w power, 17' monitor, gforce2 64ram card, 512ram and 40gb Hard Drive, XP 1600 thunderbird m/board and CD writer, radio mouse and k/board, speakers, for a couple of dollars under 2000.
Add to that, I think you would be better off buying from a computer shop rather than a general store like Farmers if that is the way you want to go.

43003 2002-04-10 05:39:00 Its horses for courses. It all depends on your technical level or availability of technical support.

If you have a good mate or someone who you know is able to help you with the computer should it get into problem then by all means go ahead and buy custom-made or self-made systems.

But if you know nothing about computers then I recommend buying from retailers because it comes with warranty. And that's always handy to fall back to if your system crap out.

I make my own PC cos I can but for friends/relatives I always recommend a good reliable local manufacturer (used to be PCDirect) or a good brand such as Dell, Compaq or HP.

43004 2002-04-10 09:29:00 If you are anywhere near auckland I can sell you what i call a BEAST for that price....
example of decent pricing:
AMD Athlon 1700XP
256mb of DDR memory (twice as fast at least compared to SD)
Shuttle Mainboard
20GB Hard Drive (easily upgraded when you look at total price)
17' Monitor
52x CD ROM
32MB independent graphics card
56K modem
120Watt Speakers
ATX case with 300Watt power supply.

$1499+GST

So there is a mean machine, and for that price you can certainly add better bits like a CD writer and a larger hard drive.

43005 2002-04-10 11:21:00 You'd be better off getting a computer custom built for you with exactly what you want.

Where are you located?

43006 2002-04-10 11:48:00 Also if you get a PC Company PC you will get a recovery CD not a real copy of windows. Like I found out when I replaced my motherboard it nolonger worked so I had no OS.

Go to a computer shop and get one made with a real copy of windows...

43007 2002-04-10 20:06:00 Ditto with the others, leave the 'Farmers' puter alone as for the dollars they ask you can get at least twice as good from elsewhere, I brought mine from a company in Auckland called PB technologies and settled on them after hunting around for many weeks, It can get confusing with all the different brands etc but stick with it and look well before you buy.
