I have decided on a notebook (for portability and space reasons), need software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and fast internet access. I personally would go for the Compaq Pressario 712AU, 1.2GHz AMD Athlon, 256MB RAM CD-RW/DVD combo, 20GB HD. Internet connection really depends on what is available in your area. | 43038 | 2002-04-10 10:11:00 | Unless you start business with a solid portfolio of clients, survival as small consultancy depends on efficient communications, and availability plus flexibility in dealing with those communications. Nothing shows up the inadequacies of a small business to a prospective client more than unprofessional or under-resourced activities such as using a fax as a copier, printing correspondence with dot matrix printers, phone line always engaged etc. I'm not suggesting that your business plan doesn't include professionalism from day one Peter, but don't forget to factor in printers, faxes, answerphones, scanners, photocopiers etc. Some of these can be a multipurpose device such as printer/scanner/copiers or phone/fax/answerphone. I run two phone lines for five services on three numbers. Jetstream and business phone co-exist on one line and private phone/faxability and dialup modem as a backup to Jetstream share the other. All business calls go out on the private line to ensure that the business line is clear for incoming client calls. Telecom charges both lines at the private residential rate under their small business plan which makes for effective and economic communications. I'm sure you have thought of all these things Peter but I though I'd post them as an ideas booster for anybody else thinking of taking the plunge into self-employment as a consultant.
