43372 2002-04-11 22:37:00 Hi all
I'm thinking of getting a KVM switch so I can easily connect my work laptop up to our home Monitor/KB/Mouse.
I notice from the Dick Smith site that there are 2 types of switch, a manual one for about $34 and a 'self powered' one for about $197. What's the difference in performance?
The 2 systems are:
Home PC - HP Pavilion 333Mhz Celeron, Voodoo3 2000 AGP card, 192Mb RAM, 19' Philips monitor, Win98.
Laptop - IBM Thinkpad A21M, 800Mhz P3, 256Mb RAM, Win2000.

Thanks

43373 2002-04-11 23:01:00 The manual switches are OK for a while but from my experience the connectors inside start to wear out and when switching between PC/laptop the screen doesn't always look right (some colours not coming through) and you have to wiggle the switch to get it just right.

The electric powered switches are much better and you can switch between each input just by pushing a key combination on the keyboard. (Or the button on the switch)

43374 2002-04-12 01:57:00 make sure the switch you buy supports high res vga or you will have to run your PC at 800x600 or put up with blur and shadow at 1024x768

Found this out the hard way!

a good high res switch is around $200
