43512 2002-04-13 00:35:00 Hi

I was just wondering is it still possible to go into bios if your computer doesn't boot up with that black screen that let's you press DELETE to go into bios, you know... that black screen that comes up when you boot up the computer. Cause I have a friend, his computer doesn't have that black screen coming up when his computer boots up.

So is it possible for him to go into bios by pressing DELETE or something else when the computer boots up?

His computer is a IBM P3-450mhz and Win98Se.

Thanks alot :-)

43513 2002-04-13 01:39:00 In short 'Nope' Do the obvious and check all your leads etc. Is your fan on the power supply working if not it is probably a faulty power supply. If the power supply is working then it may be a dead video card stopping the machine from booting.

I am assuming the computer is dead & that it is not booting at all.

If it is a compaq/hp/etc. brand name machine and it boots with a welcome type screen there will be a keyboard combination eg. Ctrl/F8 or such like you can use to get into the bios. Check the manual or the online help manual that will be on the computer.

43514 2002-04-13 03:50:00 IBMs usually use F1 as the entry key for BIOS setup. This should be pressed when there is a 'square' apttern on the top right hand corner of the screen.

Quite often an IBM will complain if you power up without a keyboard. So unplug the keyboard, power up, and when it complains, plug the keyboard in and hit the F1 key to get into BIO setup.

I assume that there is life oin the machine --- it boots up Windows or whatever without trouble.

43515 2002-04-13 09:45:00 IBM, Compaq, HP and some other manufacturers bypass the standard startup screens (black screens as you call them) with their own proprietary screens. Your friend needs to consult his manual or ring IBM to find out how to deactivate this bypass or at least gain access to BIOS SETUP. Guest (0)
