43435 2002-04-12 05:28:00 iam running win98 ,i installed my modem on port 3 it works fine but i cant see port 3 listed in device manager tab in system properties there are only port 1 , 2 and ecp printer port (lpt1)

why cant i view it there

43436 2002-04-12 05:51:00 port3 is a virtual port. its shared with port1. you often find you can't connect anything to port1 due to it conflicting what you have installed on port3. Guest (0)
43437 2002-04-12 05:53:00 It is likely that you have Software (or Win Modem).

The modem driver emulates (or creates a fake port) which it uses.

This is very common, especially with modems with Conexant Chipsets.

43438 2002-04-12 05:55:00 You probably have a 'software modem' where part of the modem function is carried out by the CPU. Part of this software is a 'virtual port' that allows programs to communicate with the 'modem port', but in reality they are talking to the software that drives the modem. Hence you don't have a 'hardware' port 3. Guest (0)
