43566 2002-04-13 08:22:00 I copied and pasted a page off the net to word. Now I want to delete it, but I can't. This is the message I getwhen I press delete:

Cannot delete fantasy8:access denied. Make sure the disk is not full or writprotected and that the file is not currently in use.

All I copied was a page of information. I have no disk and the file is not being used, I can't even open it.

Anyone out there with an answer? All advice greatly appreciated.

43567 2002-04-13 08:43:00 Hi Y

I assume you know the file name and location, so go to it in Documents or Explorer, right click/select properties and make sure that read only is not ticked.

You could also try dragging it from the Desktop to the Recycle Bin.

Somebody else might have further advice, but I've met peculiar files before that couldn't be deleted using Windows program features and in the end I've resorted to ZTree to kill the beast.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers

43568 2002-04-13 09:31:00 You can try deleting it from a DOS Prompt you can try Safe Mode you can try Safe Mode command prompt. One of these methods should work. Guest (0)

43570 2002-04-13 10:40:00 I have noticed that all of the above solutions actually have windows running, which may be the problem.

If none of them work, then you may want to try deleting it from pure DOS.

Step One: Take down the file name and full path to the file. As we will be using DOS, we will need the DOS names of your path and files. Generally, if the file or directories name is 8 characters or less (not including a files extension, eg .doc) in length, then it is Ok. If it is longer than 8 characters, then the name will USUALLY be the first six characters (excluding spaces) of the file name, followed by '~1', and then the extension. If that is all to confusing, then just right-click every folder and the file itself, and choose properties. On the general tab there, you wilkl see 'MS DOS Name:', that is what it will be called in dos.

Step Two: Reboot you computer. When your computer is booting up, you should see something like 'Starting Windows 98' written on the screen. When you see this, you need to press the F8 key. If you do not see this, then reboot your computer, and continually press the F8 key as often as you can. Once this is done, you will be presented with a list of options. Select 'Command Prompt Only'

Step Three: Type 'del c:\mydocu~1\fantasy8.doc', using the path you found before.

Step Four: Cross your fingers and hope it works. (It will tell you if it doesn't).

Step Five: Reset your computer. Your computer will not need to be 'Shut Down' as through windows, in DOS it is perfectly fine just to switch your computer off. Alternatively, you could just type 'win' at this point to load Windows.

Good Luck!
