43774 2002-04-14 09:43:00 I'm using Adaptec easy cd (the Ver4.05 lite version that comes with the CD writer - an Acer 8x4x32) and suffer from buffer underrun if I try to write at 8x. Is it possible to use some of my system ram (i've got 390meg) to supplement the 2 meg buffer in the writer? I'm running Win98se on a PIII 550. If this is possible, does anyone know how to do it?
Cheers

43775 2002-04-14 10:16:00 Okay, I've never actually made it to 8x succesfully, and I use Nero burning rom 5.5.4.0, I think.
I recently adjusted the settings for manual RAM allocation, it reccomends now more than 40%, so I've got 64MB (Don't mock me now..) That means it allowed me to have 29 MB (Dunno why) and this has allowed me to easily burn at 4x compared to a max of 2x when i only used defaults (16MB Ram allocated) so I'd check the preferences and icrease the amount of ram it can use, and BTW, Press:
Ctrl + Alt + Delete
and check whats running in the background, u can close stuff like norton anti virus etc, only explorer needs to really be open, but I'd do a reboot after your burn to re-open the programs ('systray' controls sound i think, so i ususally leave that going to, for immediate gaming afterwards) I hope this helps

43776 2002-04-14 10:47:00 My system specs. and software is identical to yours. I always write at 600kb/sec and never any problems. What is a few more minutes. Guest (0)
43777 2002-04-14 10:49:00 Sorry correction, my ram is only 64, the rest is the same. Guest (0)
43778 2002-04-14 13:31:00 I hope your not serious about stating that?

Robo said that about 386s like 10 years ago. Are you going to suggest that we should have never gotten faster and more improved.

43779 2002-04-14 13:36:00 Is this writing CD to CD and not copying to your hard drive?

If you're burning off your hard drive it should be quicker at getting a constant flow of data to the CD without causing buffer underruns depending on your IDE devices and how they are set up.

43780 2002-04-15 02:13:00 CD to CD depends on the source cd. Most data cds will never write at 4x (depends on the number of small files) for me, but audio to audio works fine at 4x (won't look at 8x though). It is the writing from the hard drive that concerns me. I only have the essentials running in the background - no virus checker etc. The first respondant said they were able to allocate RAM using Nero, so is it possible with the Adaptek software, and if so, where and how?
