43789 2002-04-14 10:32:00 Networking 98SE via UTP with crossover
Okay,
I have no HUB, and 2 PC's running Win98SE, I've got a crossover Cable that has worked, coz I've had one networked with a previous PC of mine. I want to know everything there is to know about configuring Windows for TCP/IP protocols and IPX/SPX Protocols too. I know a bit about IP addresses and how to change mine (I created a chat program and therefore to host had to know how to change my own)
Both network cards work ( I hope) and I'm just really stuck
any helkp greatly appreciated
Thanks

43791 2002-04-14 11:41:00 IPX/SPX is needed for some games but now most of them use TCP/IP so installing IPX/SPX is not required. The less protocols you have installed the better performance you'll get from your network or so I am told.

You'll need TCP/IP installed for your network and Client for MS Network. IP addresses can be statically created.

You can use 192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0 x being anything from 1-255 the subnet mask being 255.255.255.0

There's another option somewhere that I've forgotten that shows the PC on both computers. I read somewhere that computers usually compete for who is going to show the computers as only one likes to be the host and the other the client. I think it's called LMBrowser or something. Just set them both to do it.

Next you'll ping both computers and localhost as well to test to make sure that the network is working. Sorry I am in a rush I would have explained more in detail but I have to go now.

43793 2002-04-15 10:54:00 If you are really serious about learning Networking and all the protocols, i would highly recommend Network +. it is a very in depth look at networking covering everything including the 7 level OSI model. Guest (0)
