43795 2002-04-14 08:31:00 I have reformatted my pc but Nortons utilities tells me I have no physical memory left ..tho it does jump from 0.0MB to about 17.0MB....pages on the net are slow to open and I get this page is unavailable a lot.
I thought that by reformatting it took the pc back to factory conditon..am I wrong or is something wrong with the pc??
I have a HP pavillion 6619 am running windows 98 and am sposed to have 64MB of RAM. I know I could add more RAM but at this stage dont really want to...any help appreciated

43796 2002-04-14 10:25:00 Right click on My Computer and you will see the physical memory installed. Run Scandisk and Defrag. How many things have you got running in the Task Bar at bottom right as unloading anything you don't use will spead things up. Guest (0)
43797 2002-04-14 10:50:00 Yes, your machine *should* be back to factory condition after a reformat. However, if you have reinstalled all the programs you had before, it would slow it down again although still be a little faster than pre-formatting.

Personally I find Norton Utilities a bit of a slow-down and stopped using it.

Apart from that, what else do you have running (eg antivirus, firewall, etc)? What browser and its version are you using?

It would also help a lot to know what programs slow it down the most.

43798 2002-04-14 13:56:00 I had the same computer.

Unfortunately factory settings were slow as well so I formatted it completely getting rid of HP software and repartitioned and install Win98SE onto it.

Memory wasn't that great either so I upgraded it to 128MB PC-100 since I wanted to keep it the same with the Memory that was running with the PC. No point paying a little more when upgradability was minimal.

43799 2002-04-18 07:32:00 after I refomatted I only installed Nortons Utilities and their antivirus and system works and ICQ. The pc seemed to pick up speed..then I added Zonealarm...MSN IM...and Office 2000....it really died after installing office so I uninstalled it but it hasn't picked back up again. I havent installed any of the other programs I had and won't till I can get this sorted out.
I am using IE5.
BUT also........ when I recovered I noticed that before windows kicked in the dos screen showed as....
batch file missing
C:\
but it didnt say any more and the pc continued on its merry way
