44024 2002-04-16 01:46:00 I recently got hold of a pentium 120, 32 mg of ram, 1mg video card etc etc, I'm trying to hook it up to the phone line for internet etc. I used the standard modem, with standard drivers and everything, except when i hit connect to connect to the net, the modem makes a clicking noise, waits a few seconds and returns a message saying there is no dial tone, could this be a problem with the modem or the actual phone line/wires. I have managed to find out that it is a zoltrix modem and little else, i'm having diffilculty finding the model number except that i suspect it is a 33 or 28k modem. Thanks for the help

44025 2002-04-16 02:18:00 Had the same prob with my dad's comp.

Try lifting your phone first to get a dial tone, and then clicking connect to see if that works.

Did the modem used to work?

Have you changed anything lately?

If the answers to these questions are 'yes' and 'no'respectively, then I would start to think that you modem has suffered a spike thru the ph line and is damaged.

This may not be the case, but let us know what you find out with the 'phone' test.

44026 2002-04-16 02:28:00 Hi, Thanks
I havn't used the modem and it doesn't like anyone has ever by the amount of dust, also it wasn't possible as someone hadn't installed it properly so the cable wouldn't click in properly, i've fixed that now along with the newest drivers.
I tried picking up the phone and hitting the connect and nothing was going from the computer to the phone line so i suspect a damaged modem. The machine is a bit tempramental and old so i'll try borrowing an old modem off someone and seeing if that works. Thanks for the help

44027 2002-04-16 11:26:00 This is a symptom of having pulse dialing selected instead of tone in Dial Properties.
Double click on My Computer
Double click on Dialup networking.
Right click on the connection icon and click on properties.
Put a tick in the box 'use area code and dialing properties' Win 95 will have slightly different wording.
Click OK and double click the connection icon.to open the connect window.
Click on Dial Properties at the bottom.
Select tone dialing at the bottom and click OK.
Close the connection window and right click the connection icon in dialup betworking again and select properties.
Remove the tick from the box use area code dialing properties and click OK and close dialup networking.
Your modem should now dial normally.

44028 2002-04-16 13:42:00 Things that can prevent the modem connecting include an unusual dial tone and call waiting. Try disabling the 'Wait for Dial tone before Dialing' option. [From IE 5.5 select: tools/Internet Options/Connections/Settings (for the required dial-up connection)/Properties/Configure (under the 'Connect Using' heading. Note: This should have your modem selected)/Connection.]
Your modem should now make the normal dialing noise. If not, check the 'Distinctive Ring' and 'Forwarding' settings (also under the modem's configuration settings).
If it still won't dial, then you may have the wrong drivers, a damaged file in you IE installation (eg winsock32), or a driver conflict (check this by going to Control Panel/System/Device Manager and view the modem properties).
