1296104 2012-08-21 19:53:00 I have a slight issue.
I have a Thnkpad here which is in need of a new h/d and reinstall of Win 7.
Problem is: there is no boot from CD option in the BIOS.
One can only boot from HD or LAN. Seems the CD option has been disabled by a supervisor password in BIOS; and the owner has no idea what this password is.

How can I install Windows on a laptop that won't boot from CD. Or how can I bypass this password?

1296105 2012-08-21 20:06:00 Have you tried booting from a USB pen drive? If that works you can get win7 to install from there or get a USB optical drive. CYaBro (73)

1296107 2012-08-21 21:24:00 One way around it, it may sound a little odd but it should work.

Attach the new HDD to another PC, install windows7 on that.

Dont install any other drivers apart from what comes with windows, and dont activate it. Once done run sysprep ( generalize /shutdown ) through it. Place the drive into the IBM, boot it up, since it was syspreped it should install new drivers for the IBM and then carry on as normal.

1296108 2012-08-21 22:17:00 Or setup a server with WDS and Windows 7 boot and install image and boot from the LAN to install it. :D
That's how we are doing pretty much all installs at work now.

Is there any good link (you would recommend) to deploy the sysprep?

Cheers

1296110 2012-08-22 06:55:00 link ??? If you mean instructions heres How I do it, usually works fine. This is for W7.

Install Windows on a Machine, including the product key for the version you will be making, Make up a user name (this will be removed in a moment) - DO NOT activate it. ( if you want to add programs or updates Now is when you do it)

TIP: One trick that I have found, sometimes you get a error message after running sysprep/reinstalling, but as a precaution, once W7 is installed go into msconfig/ service and untick Windows Media Player network Sharing Service and reboot.

Now run sysprep:

Once W7 is installed, any updates done etc - go to C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep Folder, right click sysprep.exe / Run as administrator. Select the settings as shown below:

4134

The computer will run through and auto reboot, let it do its thing. Once it reboots it will boot into Audit Mode.

Go to Control Panel/ user accounts / Remove the account you made previously.

Go back to Sysprep , - this time select the options as Shown:

4135

Sysprep will do its thing and shut down.

If you wanted to use this for any other PC, make a image of the drive Via a bootable CD. then load it back onto ANY PC. If you wanted to use the drive as myth asked, simply put it into the other PC.

As long as everything has gone as it should, when booting up, it will detect the new hardware, drivers, change the Reg, - you will be shown the setting up your computer for first use, you add in your name you want to use, your product key, and carry on as normal.

I do this as well, takes less that 5 minutes to install windows on a new PC, as the image is on one of my servers. Then of course you have to install the MB drivers as normal. and lastly check the WMP network sharing is put back to active.

1296111 2012-08-22 07:07:00 Thanks, wainutech. That's exactly what I wanted to know.

What did you use to create the bootable image, from Windows built-in utility -back up & resrtore?

1296112 2012-08-22 07:42:00 All USB boot options have been disabled too

I take it that you have tried putting the disk in anyway and hitting the f8? key on POST (lets you select boot drive).

Also depending on where the bios settings are saved to taking the laptop's CMOS battery out should clear/reset the cmos removing the password.
