1272830 2012-04-30 04:35:00 A new survey run by a UK insurance company has revealed that one in five young drivers play Draw Something or Angry Birds while driving, and more than 30 per cent admitted they check Facebook from behind the wheel.

Recombu reports that ingenie, a UK-based driving insurance company for 17-25 year olds, asked 1,000 of its customers how they used their phones while driving as part of its Don't Drive Distracted campaign. Shockingly, 18% admitted that they had played Draw Something while on the road, and 17% said they had played Angry Birds behind the wheel. Almost one in three of the drivers surveyed by ingenie said that they check Facebook while driving.

The survey also asked the drivers whether they use other functions on their phones while driving. More than 40% said they had answered calls without a hand-free set, 44% said they had sent a text, and 62% said they have read a message while on the road.

Of the male drivers surveyed, one in six said that they had had an accident while using their mobile phone.

Aiming to encourage safer driving, ingenie also launched an app for its customers, despite its survey showing that 58% of 17-25 year olds agree that smartphone apps are distacting drivers. The app provides feedback on the driver's swerving, braking, speed and acceleration through a device fitted in the car.

We don't have any data for young New Zealand drivers, but we'd hope the numbers were lower -- our smartphone penetration rate is lower, after all... I've heard of Angry Birds, but never seen it and dont know what Draw Something is but this is just crazy !! one in six have crashed while using their phone :horrified

Many people still use cellphones while driving (talking and txting) , despite being illegal these days and the cops don't seem to be doing anything about it.

1272833 2012-04-30 07:13:00 Haha nothing changes or should say is denied and surprised by it .

10 years ago or more was flatting with some people who sat on the Auckland motorway over the harbour bridge reading while driving, eating their breakfast as well as applying make up etc whilst driving . Now its talk on the phone play games etc .

Yet still the surprise is there when one these "surveys" comes out .

1272834 2012-04-30 07:23:00 Eating/makeup, although dangerous are not as bad as reading/games which require more direct concentration and remove the user for spatial reality. The Error Guy (14052)

Eating, hmmm. There was a woman killed near Huntly a while ago - she dropped her sandwich and bent down to get it - crossed the centre line.

Makeup - I thought that involves looking in a mirror and fluffing about in quite a slow time consuming way.

1272837 2012-05-02 00:22:00 The Idiocy of some people astounds me. Maybe they need to invent some kind of proximity sensor into everything electronic so it won't operate within a metre of the steering wheel or something, but then they'd just lean over into the passenger side no doubt.

It's not new either, I seem to remember David Lange getting in the news for reading his newspaper while driving many years ago. I don't recall if he had an accident or not.

I will eat and drink while driving or check messages while sitting at the lights, but I'm always prepared for the possibilty I will have to wear the food if I suddenly need both hands. A dropped sandwich is not worth urgent retrieval as it just became rubbish anyway.

Its an easy fix .
Instant loss of license, on the spot . It will then sort itself out pretty rapidly
a fine is no real deterrent

It is disturbing seeing drivers txting in my rear view mirror :annoyed:

but 1 in 5: I find that very hard to believe . Just some publicity seeking by an insurance co I suspect

1272839 2012-05-02 04:58:00 I had an apprentice a few years ago who crashed his car while looking on the floor in the passenger footwell to turn of the dash mounted TV, legally in England these are meant to not be able to be used if the engine is running, but he had a mate rewire it.
