1272045 2012-04-25 23:24:00 I have a lot of experience with African Elephants, having helped to build a railway line through the Mikumi Game Park in Tanzania. We lived amongst them. Here are some of the characteristics of the African Elephant.

* Male elephants have a periodic condition called "Musth", evidenced by a discharge from glands on both sides of the head. This causes pain to the eyes, and makes them very bad tempered. DO NOT go near an Elephant in Musth. The condition can last up to 8 weeks.
* Elephants hate anything with an offensive smell, they often bury the object, or cover it with thorn bush.
These items included bodies and drums of Diesel oil.
* They love music, especially classical. They would come into the camp and listen to a record player owned by one of the workers.
* Unlike most animals, Elephants will help each other. Feed another with an injured trunk, support a sick or injured Elephant.
Help them out of deep mud.
* They are very intelligent, and normally not aggressive, unless with young or in Musth.
The young Bulls can be a bit troublesome just like humans!

1272049 2012-04-26 00:38:00 In a way the vet had it coming. Fancy sleeping with an elephant, particularly an African one. They are not as docile as there Indian cousins. This is why in circuses you mainly see Indian ones. If you don't know the differance between the two, the African elephants have the bigger ears.

1272053 2012-04-26 03:09:00 Elephants also like to live in groups.

Tied up in circuses for years and poked and prodded to make them to do things can make anyone grumpy - even an elephant. Or especially an elephant?

Even if it didn't mean to be too vicious, it's large. My cat gets grumpy and scratches me, however I survive cause she's small. Elephants are large so a bit of squeezing can have more of an effect than it may expect. People who work with large wild animals - even if that animal has been in captivity for ages - should remember that. People always act so surprised when something like that happens.

Also, really pissed off elephants attempting to kill something don't just give them a squeeze, they are quite persistent and tend to leave nothing more than a smear on the ground.

Then you should have stayed away from the elephant.

Works for me.
