2012-08-23 08:02:00 | I've just today acquired a used tower, which when I initially set it up worked perfectly excepting for the sound. Then a half hour in, there were a couple of loud "pops" and the tower shut down. Subsequent attempts to fire it up proved negative - there just isn't any power getting into it. I used the existing cables from the previous system to hook up the new tower. When it decided to quit, I simply reattached the cables to the old components again, which all work fine again. I've done the usual trouble shooting. The surge protector is intact, and no circuit breakers (on the board) popped. It seems to be a power issue, but I'm totally lost if I were to open the case. Could anyone living in Auckland volunteer to do a diagnosis and/or provide a fix? :badpc: (Come back, Speedy Gonzales .... )

2012-08-23 08:12:00 | Pity I'm not in Auckland (and I'm no IT guy) your power supply is probably worn out. Blown. Do the PSU vents smell odd?? | ChazTheGeek (16619) | |

2012-08-23 08:27:00 | Get the psu out and have a good look around. imgur.com (note the white stuff on the side of the capacitor 4.bp.blogspot.com), if that's everywhere/all through the PSU consider it dead. Or if any of the caps look like this: static2.davidkennardphotography.com then it's also dead. | icow (15313) | |
2012-08-23 08:29:00 | Pretty bad. Those images are sickening. I hate destroyed PC parts. | ChazTheGeek (16619) | |
2012-08-23 08:34:00 | That's why you buy quality parts like corsair so when they do you're covered with a 3 year warranty (for their mid range psu's at least). | icow (15313) | |

2012-08-23 09:00:00 | If you can .. you could swap over a working PC's PSU over to see if it works. They normally only have 2 connectors to the motherboard. Two big white ones. | Nomad (952) | |
