44310 2002-04-17 10:34:00 Hi all.

Running W98, and on startup (second screen) where it says ...loading W98 there is a message flashed on the screen for a split second before the screen closes, I think it says something about a file missing, but I'm not sure (a very split second).

Anyway I have tried to use the pause button without success, and wondered if there was some way of accessing the message in a easier way?

The old K6-266 runs well but I do like to keep loose ends tied up.

44311 2002-04-17 11:05:00 Go to Start/Run enter msconfig and press enter. Slect diagnostic startup and reboot.

You should get to see virtually every step of the boot process and if you don't catch your errant file, either forget it or try blinking as it passes by. If it ain't broke, no point in trying to fix it.

Cheers

44312 2002-04-17 11:20:00 If you mean that splash screen. Just press ESC and it disappears. If it returns another quick press of ESC. This will allow you to see what is kind of going on in the background. Guest (0)
44313 2002-04-18 06:11:00 Hiya.

Click 'start, run' and type: 'sysedit' and hit enter.
This will open all your 'start-up' files like autoexec.bat etc.
Look in autoexec.bat and config.sys for any dodgy entries.
look in win.ini and see if there is anything in the 'load' or 'run' lines that look unfamiliar.
If you have basic PC knowledge you should be comfortable with editing these files, but be careful not to delete anything arbitrarily (ooh, big word)

Good Luck

Billy, I tried your method and found the problem,( an incorrect autoexec.bat entry)
The computer lost all its startup settings in the process, and I had some fun getting things back to normal. Is there an easy way?
