44300 2002-04-17 09:32:00 I've been given a laptop of a m8's 2 fix up, it's got a built in floppy drive, and I'm getting a com cable to link it with my own laptop, but I want some software (The laptop came with a freshly formatted drive) to laplink them, and prefferably MD-DOS too, I've got DOS 6.01 I think, but I'd rather a newer version, I've got my trusty Win98 CD in MY Laptop drive waiting for me to do a link
My laptop is a pentium 133Mhz
I'm gonna be linking it to a Pentium 266Mhz Laptop, both with more than enough HD Space free
Any help appreciated greatly
Thanks
Jo

44301 2002-04-17 11:35:00 I had done the same thing with a Laptop with no CD ROM and a floppy drive connected to my PC via parallel cable.

I only had DOS 6.22 installed which has a program that you can use for host/client sharing. I think it's called Interlink.

You set that up sharing your CD ROM drive off the computer and you copy the entire CD to your laptop's hard drive. You then restart the computer with a boot disk and install the OS from the hard drive.

Because of 8.3 the program I think is called interlnk.com. There's probably a readme for it as well.

44302 2002-04-17 22:08:00 Boy, haven't had to link up computers in MS-DOS for a while! I used to do it regularly using a DOS-based program called FastWire (version after that is called FastLynx). I think FastLynx is licensed software - not sure about the older version, FastWire.

Easy to setup and use, wouldn't use anything else for direct cable DOS data transfer!

44303 2002-04-18 02:42:00 Be careful when buying the cable. A 'straight' 25 wire cable won't work (in general). Many cables with DB25 connectors do not have 25 wires -- serial cables ned only 7 wires.

Make sure you get a 'Lap-Link' cable. That will work. It will have a DB25 *plug* on each end, and will be marked as 'File transfer' or 'LAPLink compatible'. It is for parallel transfers.

If it's got *both* DB9 and DB25 connectors (sometimes with both on one or both ends [and plugs on one end and sockets the other]) it is a serial cable, and *might* be a 'Null Modem', which can be used for serial transfers.
