44208 2002-04-17 00:36:00 I posted a few weeks back to try to resolve an ongoing hassle I had with my internet connection freezing for periods up tp 40 seconds, before continuing. These pauses seemed to be around 10 minutes apart and as I'm on adsl (JetThing), it made a mockery of high performance web connection.

The #tra help desk weren't, and my lines were checked and given a clean bill of health. Very annoying.

However...Ta Dah!

I have had success. I stumbled onto a website that had a forum in which somebody had posted symptoms nearly identical to my own (well, my computer's...my symptoms are better left out of this discussion) and even better, the SOLUTION!

So, without further ado, here is the answer. You simply give your Ethernet card a static IP address. That's it.

And what a difference it makes. Surfing has become the pleasurable activity it should be on SomethingStream and if you have been suffering from freezes as I was, it's a sweet relief.

If you'd like to know how to set up a static IP address on your PC, post a response and I'll reply with the details. (Easy-peasy).

Happy happy, joy joy.

44209 2002-04-17 01:01:00 Andy, you might as post it, I cannot get adsl here but I would be interested in knowing the details if for no other reason than future reference. Guest (0)
44210 2002-04-17 01:20:00 Hokey dokey. The procedure is as follows...

Under Network in Control Panel, select the TCP/IP entry that relates to your network card. Click properties and select the IP Address tab.

If 'Obtain IP Address Automatically' is checked, select 'Specify IP Address' instead and enter an address within the range 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.254.

In the Subnet Mask field, enter 255.255.255.0 then close.

When the PC restarts, it will have a fixed address for the network card, which should stop your DUN/ADSL connection from hunting for the NIC and possibly stalling the PC.

Hope that woks as well for whomever is reading this, as it worked for me.

Cheers,

Andy.

44211 2002-04-17 13:59:00 I too have recently experienced the reported phenomenon. But it has only kicked in since last weekend, say, since 12-Apr-02. Has telecom changed anything that anyone is aware of?
.
And is there any down-side to assigning one's PC a static IP address?

44212 2002-04-17 21:18:00 I don't know of any Telecom changes in recent days, but who would know? They're not that good at keeping customers in the loop.

To their credit, the've improved the value of their Home 600 adsl by boosting the cap up to 1000. I switched since I often get up around the 800 mark, so the extra (if you'll pardon the pun) cost is easily justified for me.

I know of no downside to using a static rather than dynamic IP address, unless there is a possible security issue. But if you have a decent firewall, that shouldn't be a concern.

I believe a firewall is a must if you're 'always on', whether it's adsl, cable, satellite, or whatever they dream up next.

HTH, :-)
