44883 2002-04-21 04:56:00 At idle my cpu is at 13% usage.......

OS: Win XP Pro, all updates.

Hardware: P3 1gig, 512ram, intel 815ep chipset 1 40 & 1 30 gig HDD's, Geforce 2, CD-Rom & CD-RW.....

Everything bar Nortons(with latest updates) is disabled in start-up....under services all non essentials have been disabled....but still my cpu usage is at 13% when the computer is just sitting there.......

Anyone have any ideas???

I have put up some screen shots of the services page and taskmanager if it helps showing whats running and whats enabled/disabled.....

gibben.tripod.ca

it is doing it from a fresh reboot and nothing new software wise has been installed for ages......

44884 2002-04-21 07:44:00 You have a lot of unnecessary Networking services running so they are probably the culprit.

To make it easy have a look at the following sites which help tweak services in XP.

44885 2002-04-21 09:11:00 I was a bit apprehensive about removing too many networking services as I am on a network here...eg:2 comps and a hub connecting to Jetstart through a router...

It never used to have this usage at idle....was actually wondering if it was something in the windows update as that has been the only changes of recent.....

44887 2002-04-21 23:34:00 I recently installed OfficeXp on My NT4 system and found similar symptoms. I eventually tracked it down to the Office 'Fast Serach' facility using background time to build the serach database. You can turn this off by going into one of the Office products (Word, Excel etc) and then go

File... Search... Options...
and tell it to turn off fast search database building. I got back 50Mb of disk it had used for the database and my CPu time!
If you have 10+Gb the disk space may not be a problem but cpu could still be. I noted that even went on working when noone was logged in on the system so must be hooked in quite deep in the OS.
