44805 2002-04-20 06:03:00 I have had an HP 4200C Scanner for about two years, and when the software runs it is very good indeed. But, most times, the software has trouble starting, and just leaves the scanner 'thumping' quietly in the background. The software is the HP Scanning Software for the 4200 Series.

Many pleas to HP for help with this problem have progressed no further than statements from their 'help desk' about 'low resource and the need to increase RAM'. The predictability of hitting this brick wall every time is totally frustrating. However, I am only one consumer and scanners are low cost hardware!

I know from experience that the software has started immediately and run with quite low levels of available RAM, and the problem is very likely to be 'something' in the scanner software.

I run Win98SE, and the PC is an HP 4404 at 333MHz with 96M of RAM.

If anyone can advise a fix for this problem, I will be totally indebted to them.

44806 2002-04-20 11:49:00 Hi David,

You don't say whether or not, you have tried re-installing your software?

I have a Microtek scanner, and had similar probs - which I overcame by re-installing. Since then it has been running superbly.

Regarding your RAM, unless you have oodles of other programs running simultaneously (phew, BIG word) I would think 96mb of RAM would be oodles!

Sorry, thats all the advise I can offer, Regards AL :-)

44807 2002-04-21 04:23:00 Thank you Alan, the software has been reinstalled many times for one reason or another, and all the latest drivers and updates have been downloaded from the HP website. All to no avail.

I have no more ideas!

44808 2002-04-21 13:57:00 Hi David,
I have a HP 3300c Scanner running in Windows XP Pro with the same problem, half the time if I need to use the scanner, I need to reinstall the drivers,
This is pain for me so I save all my scanning for one big hit, If you manage to find the solution, It would much appreciated if you could let me know.(it wasn't much better using Win ME)

44810 2002-04-21 19:56:00 Thank you Marty,

One thing does seem to influence the difficulty of getting the HP4200C software to start, and that is to load up the processor with an intense task, such as running RAMFIX to groom the RAM.

This disrupts the regularity of the scanner 'thumping' and after several minutes it eventually comes to life. I am sure the problem is one of timing within the software and what we are waiting for while the scanner is hanging, is the co-incidence of some necessary conditions for starting. Loading up the processor seems to break up the software's regular cycle and enhance the possibility of this happening.

That's my theory, anyway!
