45118 2002-04-22 21:13:00 I am running Norton AntiVirus V5 on a Windows 95 OS. Up till now I have downloaded weekly virus definitions using the Live Update feature. When trying to renew my LiveUpdate subscription I was informed by Symantec that all support for Versions 4 & 5 have been discontinued and that I need to upgrade to NAV 2002 (which runs on Windows 98 or higher).
I emailed their Customer Support and was told I have no choice but to upgrade both my NAV and OS. They also told me that I can?t do a manual download of the weekly virus defs.
I know of at least one person using V4 who is able to download their virus defs manually from www.symantec.com he then simply double clicks the file and presto all virus updates are automatically installed and all at no cost.
I tried this with the 0419i32.exe file which says it supports both V4&5 running on Windows95 (a rather hefty file of 3.24mb when weekly virus defs are normally 200 to 300kb). When I double click the file I get this message:

?Your virus protection cannot be updated.
Your subscription has expired. You must renew your subscription to continue using Intelligent Updater. Run LiveUpdate from Norton AntiVirus to renew your subscription and then run Intelligent Updater again.?

If I do that I?ll just be told that V4&5 are no longer supported. They are contradicting themselves.
If someone running V4 can still get new virus defs at no cost why can?t I do the same with V5?
My PC is a 1997 PC Direct Discovery 550, 2.1GB hard drive (just over 1GB used), P166, 32MB RAM.
Please make any suggestions ?idiot proof? to follow.

45119 2002-04-22 22:10:00 Don't know about the virus definitions update but I do know that the NAV 2002 CD's that I have seen also come with NAV 2001 for Windows 95! Guest (0)
45120 2002-04-22 23:25:00 its not good to run old virus software. its not that effective against the latest virus. i've switched a fair few old nortons uses over to AVG(free). a free upto date virus scanner is far better than an old out of date one.

btw if your nortons is a full ver then try uninstalling it, remove any old nortons and live update files, clean all nortons reg entries out (regcleaner) then reinstall.
