45195 2002-04-23 05:37:00 Help!
I've got an Athlon 1800+ with XP prof and an MMX 166 running '98 SE joined up with an ethernet card each and a crossover cable but the two refuse to speak. I've exhausted the help files on both systems and I've come to the conclusion that the problem lies with the '98 machine. Specifically, the windows configuration. I don't have a 'network' applet in my control panel and all the 'help' points to needing one and I don't know how to get one. I've been to the add/remove program applet in the control panel but that doesn't seem to offer anything useful. I can't find my '98 system disk either so if I need system files some idea of an alternative source is needed. I Would be appreciate any help.
Thanks
Gary

45196 2002-04-23 09:15:00 first things first...get a 98 disk...borrow one from a mates and copy the cabs onto the harddrive. theres a small tweak you can do so windows will always look at the cabs on the hardrive each time. saves having to put in the disk each time :) Guest (0)

45198 2002-04-24 11:14:00 I had the same problem. What you have to do is first try pinging the WIN98 machine from XP and then if u do get a reply u have to set up a share. To do this, go to my computer then right click on the HD u want to share. even if it says it is shared, create a new share and click ok. now it should make it appear in the my connections (ex network neighbourhood) took me bloody ages to work that one out, hope u have the same luck i did.
