2002-04-23 05:00:00 | My OS is Win.'98 & I am running MSPublisher 97. I loaded in MSPublisher 2000 to view a 2000 file on a floppy. After uninstalling MSPub.2000, MSPub.97 will not run, an 'Illegal Operation' dialogue box being displayed. I have tried uninstalling my MSPub 97 & reinstalling it, but with the same result. When I used MSPub 2000 it stopped running after 50 operations as it was unregistered. This may be relevant. Could there be a file remaining somewhere from Pub.2000 causing the problem? Or is there a simple answer?

Ergo, no files affect the problem of being able to neither open Pub2k nor reinstall Pub97 - the limitation is in the registry. Modify at your own risk. Short solution without too much gobble-de-gook. To get Pub2k up and running again, register it with MS. To get Pub97 up and running again, delete and reinstall Windows98 followed by Pub97. |

2002-04-26 10:27:00 | Peter, I had exactly the same problem. It's a case of M$ saying, 'If I can't bat, you're not playing with my ball.' I wanted to return to using Pub 97 as it is so much more friendly than Pub98 or 2000, and I objected to registering even though I had paid for it legitimally, - although still not as good as Pub 2 under W3.1. I found the answer via a Newsgroup. When Pub 2000 is installed, even in a separate Directory, it hunts around for earlier copies of Publisher and erases the dll files which they require - so that they become unusable and you are therefore 'tied' to Pub 2000. I can't recall offhand the required dll but I have a note somewhere in my PC. If you still need it - and haven't done a complete reinstall as someone else suggested - give me a day or two to locate and I'll pass it over.

2002-04-29 04:09:00 | Peter: Thanks for you comments. Actually, it was Publisher 2002 which has caused the problem (not 2000) but perhaps the remedy is the same? I haven't tried to reinstall Windows 98 & then Pub.97. to fix the problem - perhaps this may create other problem? !t would be appreciated if you could advise me the .dll file affected. Will I find this on my original Windows 98 disc? ( By the way, I DID try deleting registry files with any reference to Publisher, but this didn't work). Regards, Peter Archer.

2002-04-29 11:33:00 | Merlin: Thanks for your response to my problem with MSPUB 97. However, another PC WORLD reader has assisted me & his suggestion was correct. Apparantly, PUB 2000/2002 leaves a file in Windows/system called 'msvcrt40.dll' which prevents PUB 97 running- as a file of the same name is in PUB 97 but does not seem to overide the file left in Windows by MSPUB 2000/2. The contents of the files must be different I guess. Anyway I renamed the file in Windows & left it there & copied the PUB 97 file with the same name from the CD to the HD- & PUB now runs! Hope this makes sense. Regards, Peter.
