Dear Xtra customer,

As more New Zealanders discover the benefits of broadband Internet,
we're giving Xtra JetStart a new name and making some changes to ensure
you can continue to enjoy a fast, reliable service at an affordable
price.

We're changing the name of Xtra JetStart to Xtra JetStream Starter 5000
to better reflect that your plan is powered by JetStream technology, and
is part of the JetStream family.

From 10 June we are also introducing a 5,000Mb cap on traffic to sites
outside New Zealand to ensure excessive use by others doesn't impact on
your Internet experience.

The vast majority of people on Xtra JetStream Starter 5000 won't be
affected, and based on your last month's usage this change shouldn't
affect you.

It means that from 10 June you will be able to surf and download as much
as you want from New Zealand-based Web sites, as well as up to 5,000Mb
of data a month from sites hosted outside New Zealand, for the same
fixed monthly price you pay now. Any additional international usage will
be just 10c per Mb.

Just to give you an idea, 5,000Mb is equivalent to sending and receiving
around 50,000 standard emails, or downloading a Web page like the
xtra.co.nz home page over 40,000 times.

From 10 June you will also be able to keep an eye on your Xtra JetStream
Starter 5000 usage on a daily basis and check your current billing cycle
online. We'll email you more details soon. And so you don't need to
worry, we also plan to email you notification if you get near the
international data cap.

Of course, you'll continue to enjoy all the benefits of connecting with
Xtra JetStream Starter 5000, including surfing the Net faster than a
standard dial-up connection and being able to talk on the phone at the
same time.

45140 2002-04-22 23:09:00 Maybe telecons share of the 'revolutionary' and bigger than we'll ever need southern cross cable wasn't enough to cover the growing needs of the growing customer base after all? As more and more people are looking at alternatives, which are eating into telecons profit margins, i am agreeing with the thought that they are just going to get all they can of who they can while they can.

Of course if telecon put less restiction on local P2P traffic, it would enable all of us to share what we have locally, instead of telecon customers downloading L-A-R-G-E files of overseas servers, which coinsidently telecon will then charge data-transfer for.

45141 2002-04-23 00:26:00 I'm sorry, but I don't think this is that bad. It is damn hard work for me to find 600Mb to download a month.

I really don't see 5Gb as much of a cap. All it does do is slow down some people who are perhaps abusing the service. And, arguably, that could improve it for others.

I have friends with Jetstart that mainly got it so they could surf the net and use the phone at the same time. They would never hit 100Mb, let alone 5Gb. They won't care at all about this.

I know Telecom aren't perfect, and neither is JetStream, but I don't think it is fair to thump them over this issue.

The people that complain most, may actually be the people they are targetting. I am prepared to be corrected on this.

45142 2002-04-23 00:33:00 Not sure if I am a typical JStart user.

I use it for surfing, email collection but my main activities are hosting online games and downloading patches for the games.

I average 4 hours each nite and came close to but seldom cross the 1GB per month.

With a 128k pipe I can host games for maybe 8 people (mainly kiwis and aussies). While I don't have much of an issue with the new cap, I much rather they also up the bandwidth to minimum 256kbps.

45144 2002-04-23 00:38:00 I can see why Xtra are doing it. But I *think* that if I had JetStart I would use more than 5GB per month.

45145 2002-04-23 01:06:00 Considering I was still in the process of choosing an ISP for JetStart Telecom/Xtra have definitely ruled themselves out. I know for certain that the ISP I choose I'll be doing a lot of downloading at the start until I get everything I want. After that it's just easy cruising and gaming.

I still have till the end of this month to choose a provider. World-net seemed alright with unlimited traffic except for the $40 sign up fee.

Paradise has 10Gigs international traffic which is reasonable though I know I can reach that limit starting out but there's no signup fee.

Xtra looked good. I liked the idea of having only one bill but that doesn't cut it for 5Gig international traffic. I really think they don't want anymore people joining up with them.

Guess they are finding it more expensive than they thought and there's no profit being made from it.

45146 2002-04-23 01:37:00 lame, lame, and more lame

Isn't it great to wake up to a nice informative mail when you've only recently signed up to their flatrate service. How farther back must telecommunications be pushed in this country under the auspice of 'creating a better service'. I would imagine the government report on telecommunications requiring only a 14.4 modem access helped Xtra here in spades.

Bring on the competition, Telstra/Clear there's thousands ready to switch...

45147 2002-04-23 02:15:00 I think the beef from most people is that the speed will remain the same. So you get less data, same speed all for the same price. Beautiful!! Guest (0)
45148 2002-04-23 02:53:00 What made you think Telstra/Saturn/Clear will bring the price down? My aussie mates are scathing about Telstra. Guest (0)
