| 45373 | 2002-04-24 06:02:00 | hi im new at this so be nice to me. I have just recently received a free 486 from my school. It was part of a network and had no hard drive in it. when i installed a hard drive in it i went to go into setup but found it asking for the current password. my school does not know what it is. is there any way to get into setup. |

| 45374 | 2002-04-24 06:14:00 | If it is a Compaq, or an IBM, look inside the cover for a lable showing the jumpers. The appropriate jumper to clear the BIOS password will be marked. If it uses a 'coin' style lithium battery, you can remove that for a while -- I tend to leave it overnight. If it is a soldered-in NiCd battery, there is often a jumper near it or the BIOS chip marked something relevant. If it is an Award BIOS, the standard password is AWARD_SW, I seem to remember (Upper case is needed). You should be told what the BIOS is on the screen. If none of these will help, post again with some more information -- Make of box, make of BIOS. |

| 45375 | 2002-04-24 07:15:00 | Graham, just a tip for when clearing the CMOS with the battery method. Once you've got the battery out, unplug the computer from the wall. The push the on button on the computer, this will use up any power left in capacitors and the like, you'll probably notice the cpu fan do a quarter turn. Then battery in and it's all go. JM |
