45302 2002-04-23 23:31:00 When I shutdown win98se, using the proper shutdown procedure, I do not receive the normal 'It is now safe to shut down your computer'message.Consequently when I go to fire up the computer at a later time I have all sorts of problems to get the thing to start. Maybe four or five times I have to restart the computer which is most annoying. It goes into safe mode sometimes or more often ,just locks up. SSome thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Guest (0)
45303 2002-04-24 00:17:00 There are a multitude of reasons why Windows will not shut down propoerly. Go to support.microsoft.com to view the Microsoft Technical Bulletin for Win 98.

Good luck...

45304 2002-04-24 12:19:00 Hi Des,

I recently had a very similar behaviour with my PC (Win98SE, Celeron 500, 128mb ram, 20Gb). It also used to 'hang' on shutdown. But in my case it was fairly obvious that the hard drive was failing as when starting the machine it wouldn't boot more often than not, saying that it couldn't detect my hard drive. The drive was 'spinning up' but the BIOS just couldn't 'see' it. Are you getting any POST error messages at all? My solution was to replace the hard drive and the behaviour ceased immediately. I would check your hard drive cable connections, etc and if possible, try the drive in a friends computer to see if it behaves the same way.

Cheers,
Rod.

www.microsoft.com

This will work. It has worked for me and others that I have installed it onto
