45566 2002-04-25 05:57:00 I am researching my family history and have a lot of old photographs.Basically I want to scan them and possibly resize or edit them with a view to eventually publishing them in a book. I have done NO work at all in this area before but need to get started so I would appreciate any comments or advice on suitable programmes to use for this bearing in mind my lack of experience.Thanks. 45567 2002-04-25 07:03:00 I use Ulead Photo Express, very easy to use. Lots of features like resizing, cloning, red eye removal, touch up scratches etc. The touch-up is brilliant for old sepia or b/w photos. There are too many features to list, all very useful. I do alot of scanning photos, and if the scan isn't too good, you can fix it in Photo Express before saving and adding to the album.

45568 2002-04-25 07:24:00 Hi Tim, I have recently been doing photo editing myself and have tried a few different programs, MGI Photosuite 3 came with my digital camera and you can do any editing etc you want from this program to any photos from camera, scanned etc...,Ulead Photo Express came with the scanner and once again offers everything you would probably want too, and also there is Microsoft Picture it Publishing which might be the one to use if you wanted to publish them in a book perhaps, but all of the above are relatively easy and user friendly, as I was a novice and picked them up easily and you may already have one of these programs - perhaps Microsoft Picture It Publishing came with your computer? Resizing and editing will not be a prob in any of these programs - so good luck!! There are alot of different photo editing programs out so its hard to know where to start and i think they all basically offer the same thing. Hope this is of some help!! Guest (0)
45569 2002-04-25 08:50:00 Hi Tim, I have used quite few proggrammes but in the end have settled for Adobe Photo Shop. It can do a lot more than I have the ability to use and I am also using it so scan old photos for a family history. It got high marks in the PC World tests a while back but was marked down for it's ease of use. it is quite complicated, more of a proffessionals programme

Hope this helps,

45570 2002-04-25 12:55:00 Have to agree Adobe PhotoShop is good but costs a bit.I'm not sure but wasn't The Gimp on a recent PCWorld disk as it is pretty powerfull and is free. Actually I tend to use several as each one seems to have it's pros and cons and it all depends on what I want to do. Irfan View is a brilliant graphics viewer which you can start your favorite editor from. Guest (0)
45571 2002-04-25 19:54:00 We do a heap of photo editing work. Adobe Photoshop is a very good program but you would have to justify the expense, another one we use is PhotoShopPro. Often over looked by others it seems is the Corel range.

Features vary between brands and sometimes the ease of use for the same feature can vary between brands as well hence the use of two programs.

Adobe I have found is very good for working with damaged and/or older photographs.
