45615 2002-04-25 09:24:00 My PC is 5 months old(Duron Processor 900Mhz processor with 256 Mb ram - operating system XP)
My question is : Is the software on my PC not covered by warranty as this is what Ive been told.
For some reason one day my PC would not boot up and when it did the ongoing problems were lock ups in explorer and outlook express. The dealer blamed software ? as the problem and removed the offending part of it and charged me $50.This software had been installed almost from the word go without any problems.
I objected to this as his repairs didn't work, I fixed the problem myself by doing a system restore which also restored the offending software part.
Now two weeks down the track and it is still running OK.
I would be interested in any comments.

45616 2002-04-25 12:15:00 If PC suppliers had to cover software in a warranty they would all be broke. You said the offending software had been installed 'almost' from the word go so it wasn't part of the original software. Guest (0)
45617 2002-04-25 19:31:00 Almost from new suggests you installed the software yourself. It is possible that the vendor took a easy way out and blamed your software as the issue if the real problem could not be easily found. My understanding of new systems is software is not usually included in any warranty and especially so anything you might have installed. Guest (0)
45618 2002-04-25 21:50:00 thats right .... cannot open computer cases and does not support any software that is NOT loaded with the start of the system. For eg. if u had winME and u put XP therefore s/w is no longer covered.

Furthermore gnerally even u leave winME as it is s/w probs are not covered and some instances need to pay services to fix unless if it is very obvious ie start up or major crash. H/W of course they would fix. All they do is swap the dumb component if it fails.

45619 2002-04-26 05:57:00 Thanks Guys for your comments
I am now clear on software warranty issues

Thanks Mike it was not part of the original software - it was AG Satelite software
from the internet.

Thanks also Gordon I think you are on to what the real problem is, the vendor is not been truthful.

Thanks too RC for your comments.

Its a sad state of affairs,
Basically I don't have a warranty anymore as how could I trust this dealer for any future problems that may arise, they will probably all turn out to be software ones.

Though I think the Commerce Commission might be interested in the fact that What I have paid for is not what I received - typed out invoices & PC Device managers don't lie.
