| 45591 | 2002-04-25 08:17:00 | Hi, Long time reader, first time poster. When I purchased my computer it was preinstalled with Win98SE which I had no problems with, but out of curiosity I went and bought WinMe. Installation was pretty straight foward but now my comp is slower, less reliable and I am generally pretty pissed with Bill promising me faster startups, faster app loading and more reliablility. Is this a common problem with most people? So to cut a long story short can I revert back to Win98 without having to reinstall all my software? Thanx in advance |

Have been thinking on putting in Zone Alarm but after eading some of the recent posts and the debate started by Robo earlier I am not sure now. PP |

I had more problems with 98 and 98SE than I ever had with ME, and found ME to start and run a lot faster as well. Neither ME nor 98SE compare to the speed of XP though. You will need to reformat and reinstall everything if you're going back to 98. Mike. |

Your find that the ones from ME will greatly improve your overall Windows 98se system. Never used ME; never will!!! The most common problem I would say that most people fall into, is quickly buying a realeased product. Give it the 3 1/2 years routine before actually buying it, so that by this time, most general Hardware and Software issues would be corrected by then. This is why, there are many postings about XP!! Although I do have XP Pro with Corp files with me, but I aint rushing to put this into my PC so quickly.. Save wasted dollars and buy Win2000 Pro!!! A Windows98,Windows2000,2000 Server,Linux, user |

All it had was some cheap multimedia s/w. If u go cheap - win95 or u go stable and get NT. I do not believe anything in between ..... At the end of the day its windows. and can do jack all the more impt things are the other s/w. NT provides windows at a stable foundation. RC |

| 45597 | 2002-04-25 19:37:00 | Comes down to personal choice, I use winME on everything and have had no problems at all and it loads quick and runs very smoothly. Other people don't seem so lucky. If you want to go back to Windows98 you will need to reformat and reinstall as windows does not allow you to go backwards. If you installed WinME as a upgrade or a full version over the top of 98, this might explain the slow down, my experience of ME is that it likes a clean install. |

| 45598 | 2002-04-25 20:25:00 | Hi Daniel. Before you reformat and reinstall! When you went up to ME, did you allow the system to save the previous operating system files? If so, you could try to delete the ME by using the Add/Remove utility in Control Panel. This 'might' restore the previous OS. If it doesn't, you might still have to reformat and reinstall. Bryan. |

| 45599 | 2002-04-25 21:58:00 | Hello Daniel, A while ago on another computer I upgraded from 98se to ME and it slowed too. It turned out, was that the cpu 550mhz, was running at 100% all the time, and the only thing I could fathom was that the computer was running both 98se and ME together, although I couln't confirm it. if you took the option to keep the 98se files when installing ME,there is an option on your program list which will allow you to revert back to 98se. Then if you wish, you can use the 98se disc to format and restore. or you could take a punt, and remove the 98se files. Be aware though that if you do so, reverting back to 98se could be difficult. good luck, Bob |

| 45600 | 2002-04-26 01:49:00 | it appears that everyone has their own opinions about which version of windows to run.....its like asking people which car you should buy. I personally have used ME and had no problems with it but I have found taht if it doesn't get a clean install then it will play up. If you are going to reformat and reinstall 98se then I suggest you try a clean install of ME first. Sadly you will find that you have to reinstall all your software again if you reformat but in the ME cd is a nifty little tool called MSBackup......grab and install that from the cd. | Guest (0) | ||
