45677 2002-04-26 00:00:00 Ok so I'm going to have to upgrade my CPU...I go out...buy a Intel Celeron 950/128/100/1.75v Chip (So I don't exactly know what I've brought) and it wont fit in where my AMD K-6 chip is, they look the same the are the same size....do I need something else to make it fit or have I just wasted my money???

TIA

45678 2002-04-26 00:25:00 I think you have answered your own question ;o)

The motherboard you have came with an AMD chip and now you are trying to put in Intel.
Two different companies, two different incompatiable spec's.

45679 2002-04-26 00:26:00 I'm afraid you haven't done your homework, go to the bottom of the class!

If your present motherboard runs an AMD K6 processor, then it wont take a Celeron.

It will most probably only accept an Intel Pentium up to 200-300 MHz.

Your best bet is to read the motherboard manual and see what is the max. spec. AMD cpu, else get a m/b to take the Celeron.

Always RTFM!

45680 2002-04-26 08:14:00 Hi John

If you've got a board that takes a K6 CPU (is K 6 or K 6 2) it will be a socket 7 or super socket 7 board (the socket is what your cpu fits into).

If its super socket 7 it will take a maximum cpu of K6 2 550MHz and poss an Intel P 233MHz mmx cpu.

If you want more processing power you will have to upgrade, at the least, your mother board.

Cheers

45681 2002-04-29 13:34:00 your new celeron cpu is for socket 370 and your old cpu takes a socket seven...ever hear of??
'square peg won't fit in round hole'
If you still have your receipt take that crappy celeron back and get a AMD duron 900 and new mother board because you are going to have to get a new motherboard anyway..The duron will run rings around a celeron and be less than half the price approx $120.00 compared to $220.00
