1273691 2012-05-05 08:47:00 Just read there will be no DVD playback on win8 natively (to cut down on royalty costs since many PC's didn't have a DVD drive and most of those that do don't actually play DVD's)

What's your thought on that? Personally I don't care/mind as it is unlikely to affect me in anyway.

1273696 2012-05-05 22:38:00 There was some discussion at neowin saying that VLC and other media players played DVD's on previous versions because the MPEG2 decoder licence was all ready present in the windows environment and therefore it [VLC] was able to use the licence to play DVD's. Since it is not present on Win8 a workaround would have to be developed. (either through a paid version or a bit of "tweaking")

The end result is the same though, the people who use VLC and the like probably know whats going on with the lack of DVD licensing. It's the "simple" end users that will be confused as hell

1273699 2012-05-06 02:20:00 VLC doesn't use the windows codecs it has it's own inbuilt ones, which is why it will play formats you haven't installed codecs for. I'm not 100% sure this is the case for DVDs as well but I hope so.
Interestingly windows never used to provide the DVD codec, and it's a feature they seem to have added quietly along the way because I never heard it mentioned, just one day noticed it worked after a fresh install.

Still, I have accumulated a collection of free versions of Power DVD from various hardware over the years so I'm not concerned.
