1273090 2012-05-01 05:47:00 Just noticed my new mummyboard which I picked up today (still waiting for CPU), has a mSATA slot on it. I run mirrored main drives (going to be a bit of fun come the day to put the new brains in), but would getting a small SSD drive to put like the pagefile or something on be worth it? Plenty of reviews and such about them on the net, but doesnt seem to much on what you can actually do with them - apart from put the whole OS on it, which I dont want to do.

Just wondering what to do with it - if anything. I know a few here have normal SSD's (which I may get one day down the track when they are big enough and cheap enough)

All ideas, thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.
Please and thanks
Ian

1273091 2012-05-01 07:24:00 I assume it's a Z77 motherboard?

If so, you should hopefully be able to use it with Intel's SRT tech.

SRT is basically using a small (32-64GB I think) SSD as transparent cache.

1273092 2012-05-01 07:56:00 Hmm interesting idea, meanwhile I was at the Nelson recycle shop today and picked up an unopend boxed PCI sATA RAID card for $2 have no idea what I'm going to do with it yet but it was a bargain.

Might just have to rebuild my serverone day and raid the backup drives

1273093 2012-05-01 09:05:00 I don't think Intel's cacheing technology requires use of the mSATA port. (but don't quote me) It logically shares a regular SATA port on my Z68

Me? I would consider getting a cheap disc for the system plus somebody's cast-off 40 GB SSD as a cache for it.

The caching technology can be blazingly fast on occasions. If I use ImgBurn to make an ISO the ISO goes into the cache PDQ and I can write it out to DVD straight away. Meanwhile the cache is still trying to write itself to disc

Remember reading something about SRT (RST I think - Rapid Storage Technology - or is that something different again?) and the boost it gives ages ago but never looked further into it (as you often dont when you dont have or work with the technology), found a good article on setting it up here (www.hardwaresecrets.com) and might give it a bash I think. Thanks for your help, really appreciate it :)
