1296596 2012-08-24 04:41:00 Does anyone have a solution for the Galaxy S3 wake up delay issue?

This is not the 0.5 to 1 second delay caused by the OS waiting for the double tap. The wake up delay is close to 8 seconds, but not every time you try to wake the phone, it gets very annoying. It doesn't matter if you wake the phone using the home button or the power button, and it doesn't seem to do it every single time.

The wake up delay only started recently, does not appear to coincide with any new App install, but who knows, it could be some of the App updates or the recent firmware update from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4.
Come to think of it, my Galaxy Note is also waking up with some delay now but only about 1 to 2 seconds, only just noticed that after trying to figure out the S3 issue!

There is no live wallpaper, only widgets on the home screens are the standard Weather widget, Calender, Music Player (not playing anything) and FlipBoard.
The only user installed Apps running in the background are FaceBook and WhatsApp, everything else are system processes. Killing both of these Apps does not make any difference.

Have read and tried many suggested fixes on the internet to no avail ...

1. Disabled double tap of home button to start S-Voice

2. Disabled S-Voice all together

3. Un-installed some recent apps, i.e. DropBox, ChatOn, Viber, HeyTell, Jet Audio Basic
Incidentally DropBox and ChatOn keep coming back; apparently they are part of
the bloatware and cannot be uninstalled properly. Have gone into Settings ...
Application Management and disabled them instead

Some people suggested Samsung firmware have known issues since the Galaxy S2, something to do with having to wake up the modem, but I think they were referring to 3G connections. I did however noticed that if I switch off WiFi, the phone will wake up instantaneously like it used to. So that is probably consistent with the suggestion that the firmware needed time to wake up some hardware components. But the strange thing is that it only started doing it recently. Also never seen it with the GS2 before. It is obviously not desirable to turn WiFi off as that means no IM or Email will come in!

Just checked again, if you try to wake the phone up within 3 seconds of the screen going off, it wakes instantaneously as expected, but any longer, it goes to that long wake up delay.

1296597 2012-08-24 05:01:00 reinstall to stock?? GameJunkie (72)

It was stock, and the update to 4.0.4 was OTA, not a manual install.

The wake up delay seems to be on the Galaxy Note as well now (also on 4.0.4), albeit only for couple of seconds; so I guess it is "possibly" related to that version.
However, just checked on the Galaxy Tab 7.7, it is on 4.0.4 and no wake up delay at all.

Will wait and see if anyone has other suggestions before resetting the phone(s).

1296599 2012-08-24 06:12:00 Check your battery usage history by going Settings --> Battery
See what uses it the most

Then go Settings --> Apps --> Scroll to the right to "All" --> Find the app --> Force Stop & Clear Data
See if that helps.

There is no weird apps hogging the battery

Screen 31%
Cell Standby 13%
Android OS 11%
AppKik 4% (used this to backup, uninstall & kill app processes)
Device Idle 4%
Play Store 2%
app. Launcher 2% (com.,sec.android.app.launcher)
FaceBook 2%
Media Server 2% (I guess this is AllShare)

1296601 2012-08-24 06:27:00 Just letting you know... task killers can increase on-demand speeds on the phone, but can also slow down the start up of the device. Try uninstalling any task killer apps and see if that helps. stratex5 (16685)

Thanks for that. I read about the issues with Task Killers, but have never experienced any issues personally with AppKik though. I like AppKik for its APK backup & Move2SD functions, much easier to backup and install the same APK across all my devices without having to download them all over again each time. Don't worry, I am not pirating any Apps as they are ALL free apps, never had any needs to buy any paid Apps yet.

This wake up delay issue only appeared recently and I have used Appkik on more than 7 Android devices for eons and have not come across any real problems.

Appkik did crash on startup occasionally on my Galaxy Note when I first installed ICS (4.0.3) but hasn't crashed since 4.0.4. The ICS 4.0.3 was installed via ODIN using official Samsung firmware. For some unknown reason, it was not available via OTA nor Kies on all the NZ G.Note I have seen, nor my friend's Aussie version; it was available OTA on my HKCLS version months ago.

The firmware on the Galaxy S3 is all stock, only update was 4.0.4 via OTA. None of my current devices have been rooted, the only device rooted was my HTC Desire from way back, but didn't see any advantages after rooting it really, so couldn't be bothered rooting any of the new devices.

ICS 4.0.3 was not available OTA or via Kies on my Aussie version Galaxy Tab 7.7. Downloaded the UK firmware couple of weeks ago and installed via ODIN. Then 4.0.4 came via OTA and its running brilliantly, smooth as, way better then HoneyComb! Have been waiting for ICS for the G.Tab for ages as I prefer to use Chrome than the stock browser and it only works in ICS or above. Chrome crashes sometimes when I "share" the page via Gmail but killing Chrome and restart it is pretty quick and it restores all the Tab/Pages automatically.

1296603 2012-08-24 07:59:00 Doesn't matter, I'm with stratex5, I'd get rid of it.
Android does an amazing job of managing your devices resources. You *want* the RAM to be used because it doesn't slow it down, in fact it speeds up subsequent re-launches. Move2SD is a feature built in to Android, and APK backup can be done with Astro File Manager.

Also, if you buy an app on one device, you can go into the Play Store and install it on subsequent devices without re-paying for it. As long as you have the same Gmail account on you device.
