| 45886 | 2002-04-27 09:05:00 | Can any one suggest a good wave editor program for cleaning up .wav files of clicks, pops and hiss recorded off old records. I have tried a demo of CoolEdit and was not very impressed. Thank you Geoff |

This is quite good for just removing pops and clicks, but doesn't remove other hiss and surface noise. You can get Popfix from: <users.chariot.net.au A relatively simple and cheapish audio editing program for filtering out noise is Acoustica. It needs experimenting with, as do most of these programs to get a balance between reducing noise and removing sound you want. You can get Acoustica from: <www.aconas.de The Phonograph Ring collection of web sites(about 130)is a useful source of information on transcribing records and noise reduction etc. Here's an entry into the ring: <w.webring.com Have fun. |

The Dartpro 32 version is $US100, which is fairly steep, but it does an excellent job (the professional version is $US400 - you'd need to be keen!) Nero Burning Rom and Adaptec EasyCD both do a reasonable job at about $NZ170 each but Dart is definitely superior. It pays to get the record as clean as possible first (I've actually washed them in the sink! - with care, of course.) It depends on how many parties and spilt swill the beloved LP has been subjected to as to how well they can be restored. If you use the auto de-pop feature, you can end up losing a lot of the recording along with the scratches. I've stated this before on this forum and been shot down for it, but if you can purchase a CD copy of the LP, it's just not worth the time and effort required to restore it, but if it is unavailable, restoration is the only choice. (I find sometimes this can take several hours per track). Regards, Andy |
