45870 2002-04-27 05:48:00 Just about everything Aaron.

XP is Microsoft's latest and you have to pay for it. On the plus side it follows longstanding software command conventions and supports a wide range of programs and hardware. It comes with the regulations MS bugs but essentially it does a good job.

Linux is 'open source' i.e. free and can be downloaded from the Net if you have the time & patience. Otherwise you can buy what's called a 'Distribution' version on CD from companies like Red Hat.

By & large you need programs that have been adapted or written for Linux and quite a range come with the distribution versions but most of the popular Microsoft programs won't run. Driver support for hardware is also more difficult but getting better.

To operate Linux effectively you really need to be well grounded in PC matters to start with but if starting from scratch it would probably be quite a lot harder but you wouldn't know any better!

Not really suitable for beginners I guess.
