45968 2002-04-28 09:45:00 Everyone is seeing the results of all the html bells and whistles on a web page, so a page is generating many files.
In the good old days of Mosaic, pages were much simpler.

The gobbledy-gook folder names in temporary internet files folder are random names generated for security reasons. It's to lessen the chance of an embedded program being run from cache, since the path name to such a program is not easy to specify with a random folder name.( Aknowledgements to Livingston & Straub)

45969 2002-04-28 10:38:00 Hi again roofus

You can get rid of the lot by selecting tools/internet options in your browser and deleting them via the temporary internet files option. It's fun to watch the hard drive light blink for a couple of minutes while it dredges them out!

It is the sheer volume of files names that that VTOC (in my old language) has to keep track of. Even 10,000 files are a lot, and when a huge chunk have the same name, the indexing must get more complex.

It seems unncecessary, doesn't it?

I think it was Terry who said life was much simpler in the old days. I remember I used to have graphics turned off as a matter of course. Can't possibly get away with that now.
