46102 2002-04-28 10:09:00 Okay, after following the suggestions last time I posted my linux trouble, I can tell what I've done since.

I've tried reinstalling AGAIN... Did a minimal install (didn't install anything extra when I came to the screen of what to install) and set it to load no services on bootup, so as to eliminate all that. I tried all options in the bootloader to see if I could get somewhere to type something, but everything just tries to boot, then just freezes. I don't get any chance to type in anything anybody suggested to try.

I tried installing using a different video card driver (perhaps a generic one) but there was no option that I could find to use a different driver, so I tried different screen resolutions etc.

But still the same problem - I get the colourful Welcome screen (the pic with Welcome in about 20 or 30 languages) and 'INIT: version 2.78 booting', at which point it freezes.

I'll include here a copy that I painstakingly wrote out, then typed up of all that was on screen when I chose 'Linux-nofb' from the bootloader (you might need to 'View' the post to see more clearly what it says):

Can anybody help me? I really wanna get this going, but for some reason it doesn't want to get past that 'INIT version 2.78 booting'.

46103 2002-04-29 00:47:00 You may well have already answered these...

What Linux distribution? What sort of PC. I have loaded Linux on a few machines and the only real problem I had was with low spec machines (which is probably not the case with yours). What partitions have you created? Did you have Windows running on it before?

46104 2002-04-29 01:51:00 Phil,

Sorry, I forgot to include all the essential stuff :)

Athlon 750, 256mb, 20Gb partitioned into about 15Gb and 5Gb (the 5gb for Linux, the 15Gb has Win XP installed). I think the Linux install may have split the 5Gb into a 4Gb and 1Gb for Swap partition.

I let Linux format the partition before install, but yes, Windows XP was using the partition before I tried installing.

I hope you can help :)

46105 2002-04-29 03:19:00 Hi, whats you video card and monitor?.
I would recommend 1inux mandrake 8.1 or 8.2(havent try 8.2 yet), extremely easy to install. 8.1 costs about $80 incl gst at dick smith, or you can download it for free if you have the time. I have installed on quite a few systems of varying specs with no probs except for nvidia cards which you
have to log on as root and type 'depmod-a' reboot and your away laughing.

46106 2002-04-29 04:00:00 John,

I am installing (or trying to) Mandrake 8.1 (and have also tried 8.0 to the same result)...

I also have an Nvidia card - TNT2 M64 32mb...

how do I do what you suggest - 'log on as root and type 'depmod-a' reboot and your away laughing.' ???

This may be the answer to (not all) my problems :)
