46293 2002-04-29 07:26:00 Afternoon Steve,

Right ready to do a clean install. Here we go. These are instrutions for a pc with an OEM or bought copy on win98. may not work with those rescue cd's from Hp etc

A) First and i have to say this, Backup all the personal data you wish to keep on to disk,CD-R etc

B) With the Win98 you can either boot from cd-rom or from a boot disk. So depends what you would like to use here.
1) Place your win98 disk in the cdrom and reboot the pc. Does a message come up boot from cdrom or hardrive. If not you would need to change your Pcs boot order. Reffer to you Pc's Motherboard instructions for this, but I would recommend you use option 2 or 3 below instead in this case.
2) From the win98 control panel enter into add/remove programs. Choose the 'Start up disk Tab' and follow the instructions
3) Download a boot disk from 'www.bootdisk.com

C) Using you boot disk, boot to the command promt. (DOS). NOw before we proceed unplug any extra peripherals (printers, scanners etc - Leave these disconnected until after installing Windows 98)

D) from our command promt - Type 'FORMAT C:' and press [ENTER]

E) When finished you will have a clean c: - Yay. Now onto the installing of win98. assuming that you do not have partitioned drives your cdrom should be D:\. So from the command promt type 'd:' and press [ENTER].
command promy should now change from a:\> to d:\>.
type 'setup' and press [ENTER].

F) Win98 will now do its thing and install on your PC. Once all fisished add back on any decives that you unplugged before installing and install these 1 at a time.
