| 46233 | 2002-04-29 03:38:00 | Yesterday I posted under 'How does Norton's work?' and subsequent to Gordon's advice, have got rid of the Clayton's Norton's (!) that was on my machine and installed AVG. I told a friend about this and her response is 'Best to invest in Norton with a firewall as the others only last so long. I had one and it let worms through even with the old Norton that lasted a year. Being new to computers I was horrified and didn't know what to do. Also, if you put !0000 at top of your email addy book, worms can't use it to send worms' Comments please - is AVG not as good as Norton's. And, what's the difference between a worm and a virus (seriously!) |

| 46235 | 2002-04-29 04:13:00 | A lot of things in computers come down to personal choice. I use Nortons AV on most of my systems but I have also got AVG installed on a couple, at first it was just to see how it compared to Nortons but I now intend to put AVG progressivly on each system as they get reformatted. No AV program is fool proof. My expereince with AVG has been good, it has not let me down, I also know a number of people now using it for various reasons with good results as well. Nortons with a Firewall, I think your friend is referring to Nortons Security which is a bundled package of AV and Firewall. Again personal choice plays a part. Myself, I use ZoneAlarm Pro, it works very well for me and of those that I know also using the same, no complaints. A worm is a virus which uses in part your address book to send it self on. Some virus's out there will do other things, eg, over write critical files, do a heap of damage etc. Not to say that a worm virus will not over write critical files as well. I will stand corrected if there is a better way of describing a worm vs virus. The purpose of a firewall is to prevent selected programs which include worms and virus's, spyware, adware, trojans from calling out and to prevent unwanted access from other people. End of the day it all comes down to personal choice. Some people swear by Nortons, others swear by Mcafee, some loathe one or the other, some like AVG, the list goes on. Same goes with Firewalls. As for the !0000 in your address book, there has been some debate as to whether it really works or not, certainly no harm in having it there if you want to put it in there, not to say that the virus will use the first address it comes to though. |

| 46236 | 2002-04-29 04:26:00 | Linda, in a recent review of all the major virus checkers out there (there were over 150 tested, to give you an idea of how many major ones there are) Norton's Antivirus came in at Number 2 best virus checker on the market. I am unsure where AVG ranked - they did not come in on the top 10. Panda Antivirus rated number 1. The !0000 in your email address book *may* work with older worms, but most of them don't work that way anymore, and still spread through your email list. Norton's will only keep out viruses if you keep it updated - there are new viruses every week. The difference between a worm and a virus is usually quite big. A worm is usually something that just copies itself and sends itself to all the email addresses in your address book. The newer ones can actually do damage to your files, but they are still not considered to be viruses because they are scripts that are run to do whatever they do. A virus on the other hand actually 'infects' files and can cause major problems with your computer. Its a bit of code inside a program (usually attached to the program by the writer of the virus) that then goes and attaches itself to other files or programs, like a human virus actually infects us. This is harder to combat than the scripts that run worms. I hope that all makes sense, because I'm not sure it does to me LOL Mike. |
