| 46231 | 2002-04-29 03:29:00 | I have a problem with a friends PC, he installed Win2K and after sorting out some driver problems all seemed OK. The PC is a PIII Macromedia model and is based on an unknown brand of motherboard with onboard sound & video. We could not get the onboard sound working as there were no clues as to which driver would work. Took the easy option buy buying a $30 genius soundcard, installed and it works fine. The onboard one can be disabled I guess but no obvious way of seeing which jumper would do it. The CMOS setup has no tool to do that either. It picked up the new soundcard but also the onboard 'multimedia controller' which I disabled in device manager. All seemd pretty much OK at that point. My friend downloaded Norton Antivirus (maybe part of systemworks??) from the net and installed it. Since then, you get a few minutes use out of the PC, then out of nowhere a dialogue box appears which mentions Windows Installer, and only has a cancel button. Sometimes this dialogue box stays for a few seconds and goes, sometimes it remains there forever. On occasions there is an error msg saying something about ActiveX which flashes up, then the PC reboots itself. I tried to uninstall Norton as that was the last thing to be done before the PC went wrong, but the Norton uninstall program said it could not run as there was another installation in progress. Anyone else seen this or got any good suggestions? Any help appreciated... Neil. |
