46226 2002-04-29 03:27:00 Can anyone tell me why, when downloading, the transfer rate starts with a great rush at about 9KBs/sec and progressively drops to around 5.5KBs while the download time of course increases in like proportion until the whole process stabilises around the 5kb level. Is this normal? is it the provider? is it the time of day when traffic is busy? is it telecom? or is it simply my computer and I need to adjust some settings? Can I do something about it or mustI live with it? Guest (0)
46227 2002-04-29 04:09:00 This is normal, you can't do anything about it. In simple terms the data at the beginning and end of the file/file transfer can be compressed by your modem hence it starts at a high speed. Once you get into transfering data that cannot be compressed further then you get the 'slower' speed. Guest (0)
46228 2002-04-29 06:28:00 not quite. if you use a download manger or net graph app to see the actual speed you will find it dosn't very much. in your case proberly a fairly constant 5k.

windows normaly reports it incorrectly. i'm not 100% sure on why but most likly is due to the file info it downloads before it starts counting. from there it works out the adverage....not the exact speed you are downloading at.

46229 2002-04-29 08:23:00 5k is normal - my system does the same as yours. If it drops below about 3 I do a refresh which seems to help.

The answer is cold comfort but at least I now know not to expect anything better.I appreciate you taking the time and effort to explain exactly what is happening during download cheers. b Guest (0)
