| 46522 | 2002-04-30 11:40:00 | Hello everyone in cyberland I have a Philips 15inch screen which I brought back in 1998. I think it has died on me. When pluged in there is a horrible electric spark noise that comes from within the moniter and nothing is displayed on the screen. I changed the power cable but no luck. Is it worth getting it fixed or do I buy I new one. What really annoys me is that I would expect a screen to last longer than 4 years, I still have screens that are twice as old that still go fine. cheers |

If the latter, it is probably a high voltage breakdown and you shouldn't keep trying it. Unfortunately I have to disagree with Mike about the on off switch. While it may indeed be faulty, once the contacts are arcing enough to make a noise and stop the monitor it is likely to either catch fire or cause further damage internally as the monitor is being fed with raw 'noise' instead of 'smooth' power. It is not worth fiddling with it if you don't have the knowledge or experience as you could come to harm! Four years is actually not a bad life for a monitor if it has had regular use, and it is probably not worth repairing because you can buy a working secondhand monitor for less than the cost of a quote fee. You can't expect a repair company to spend their time looking at it and preparing a price estimate for nix so there could be up to $50 to pay up front before you even find out the answer. A lot of TV repair shops will look at monitors now so try one of them first if you decide to get it looked at. Most computer shops will just send it out anyway and add a handling fee to the cost. If you find out more about the problem post again. Cheers Billy 8-{) |
