i was still unable to get into the bios. though carefull inspection showed that 1 of the floppy drive pins on the motherboard was broken, which leads to why it may recognise it but not be able to read or write to a:\

46485 2002-05-01 06:14:00 Even that might not be terminal. Only one of the two rows of pins carries signals: there are 17 earth connections on the other row.

It could be a faulty drive. Try it on another computer. If the 'broken' pin is just missing there could be a keying plug in the cable socket at that position.

If it is a signal line, and youi can't fix it, you can certainly find a jumper on the motherboard to disable the onboard floppy controller. There must be many old computers around -- the floppy controller on an 8-bit single board from an old XT, or one of the multi-I/O boards from the later ATs and 386 will plug straight in. With the multi card you will have to disable all the other interfaces (jumpers select them).

Have a good look for that setup *programme*.
