-No dial up because I use ADSL and already have a external modem

-XP upgrade because As far as I know you can install on a clean HDD and use a Windows ME disk for the upgrade to work.

-Not sure if i'll get the sound card or not....

Basically, Will it work? and do you recomend anything?

46680 2002-05-01 11:03:00 It probably will work. Though you might be able to get some of the componets cheaper from either www.hotchips.co.nz or www.dragonpc.co.nz Also a Atlon XP system would probably be cheaper and faster. Guest (0)
46681 2002-05-01 11:10:00 I'm thinking about getting a AMD system. But i've got 2-3 months before I probably buy the components so i've got plenty of time to decide wether I get Intel or AMD.

Thanks for the site url's too!

46682 2002-05-01 11:28:00 nice case don't forget case fans

need monitor? cd drive? speakers?

a usb mouse would be better.

i prefer AMD for better speed and $$$

46683 2002-05-01 19:45:00 I would also bump up the RAM to 512MB. If your spending this much on a new system the extra RAM would be good.

I would also look at a AMD based system (for speed and price)

46684 2002-05-01 23:26:00 oops i forgot to add get a sony floppy drive as they are quieter and less trouble some than the panasonics. Guest (0)
46685 2002-05-02 00:43:00 tweak'e:
-The case has 1 8cm fan installed and 2 more optional. I've been told because I am going to use a High end Geforce card it would be best to get another one. Thinking about getting a XinRuiLian RDM8025B, 8cm Ball Bearing Case Fan.

-Already have a 17' CRT and a Boston Speaker System to use. I was thinking of using the CDRW for CDROM, but I have a 50x in a spare computer so I can always use that. I don't really care about a mouse right now, anything will do.

Ian Jourdain: I am trying to get the price down as much as possible, so I will have minimal ram to start with.

Update:
Going to change the HDD to the same model but with Fluid Bearings, mainly because it's only $4 cheaper.
www.ascent.co.nz

Because I am trying to save as much money as possible I might get a Benq 3210A CD-Writer, 40R/32W/10RW, Internal, IDE, OEM. Instead.

P.S I probably won't be getting all the parts from Ascent Technology, i'm just using the website as a place to select parts, once I have a final list of components, I will have a look through other websites and see where I can get cheaper prices/better parts for cheaper prices.

Thanks everyone for your help!

46686 2002-05-02 00:49:00 Oh and does anyone recomend a good AMD Motherboard for between $250 to $350? Guest (0)
46687 2002-05-02 00:59:00 Hi Jamie,

I would recommend the Soltek 75DRV5 using the KT333 chipset.

Always rated amongst the very best Athlon motherboards, and available for well under $300.00.

Alan

46688 2002-05-02 01:24:00 Don't waste you time with Win XP stick to 98 sec edition for gaming, its leaner and far faster requires less cpu memory etc.
