46749 2002-05-02 00:50:00 Hi, i have a maxtor 7131at hard drive 130 MB. im having problems getting a 286 to recognise it, it did before i pulled it out. ive entered manually all the bios info(like cylinder, HD, SEC, size)
and it still does not recognise it, it just goes straight into bios setup. now as before there is important files i need to backup, so im desparate now, what is the best way to get all the info off the HD??????????

46750 2002-05-02 03:20:00 Unfortunately, you might have to do some experimenting.

It *has* to be installed exactly as it was when it was formatted. And people often don't use the numbers on the disk drive.

Go in to the setup, and try each of the included types type gives a total of 128-130 MB total size, in turn. One of the settings will work, unless someone got very clever and made a 'user-defined' type.

You will have to 'Save and exit' each attempt.

46751 2002-05-02 05:24:00 I just had a quick look, and see that it should normally be installed as 1002 cyl, 8 heads, 32 sectors, 0 precomp, LZ 1002. That amounts to 125 (binary) MB which is 131 (decimal) MB. Does that agree with what you have?

You removed it. By any chance, does its 'selected' light stay on all the time? If so, unplug the 40 wire connector, and turn it over.

You did plug the power connector back in ...

46752 2002-05-02 07:59:00 Try also changing the mode of the drive in the BIOS, as the auto detect may get the size right, but the mode wrong. Try doing an autodetect to get the size right, thenchange the mode

(there should be around three of them)

If the drive is not detected by the bios autodetect, cheack the cabling.

46753 2002-05-02 22:36:00 thats the the bios info i had as well.
i have tried the cable both ways, and recheck many times the power cable, i havent tried going through the 38 setups through the bios yet, but one thing i tried was putting it on a 486, that didnt detect it at all. is there generic cabling or special cables for different drives?
well im going to run through the 38 setups, wish me luck

46754 2002-05-04 12:13:00 When you tried the drive unsuccessfully on a 486 did you use the data cable from the 286? If not, try another cable in the 286 and also check all the pins at both data cable connectors in case one got bent during the removal process.

You say that now the computer goes straight into BIOS setup on startup - that's odd. I wonder what is triggering that.

You should be able to remove and reinstall a drive without problems. Why did you take the drive out? I presume you did something with the drive or the computer while it was out. Whatever that was, it might give a clue to the problem.
