46697 2002-05-01 15:02:00 I have been looking through the howto for relevant information to connect to the internet via my ADSL/Router.

The modem is connected to the ISP already I just need to specify the gateway and set up all connections to go through the gateway.

The gateway (ADSL router) is 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0

My computers IP that I made static is 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0

When setting it up I was also asked about network and broadcast. I set the network as 192.168.1.0 and the broadcast as 255.255.255.255 is that correct? I have no idea what this is and I didn't do this when setting it up in Windows.

Now in Windows I just use the autodetect settings under the LAN in Linux I don't know where to begin. I read the DSL howto but this was way over my head.

I hope someone can help. I have no idea where to begin.

46699 2002-05-02 04:33:00 Have you read the Net-HOWTO? It's online at dunedin.lug.net.nz .

That broadcast IP address will try to broadcast to the whole world ... not a Good Idea. It should be 192.168.1.255 . You will need to make your ISP's DNS your DNS address.

If it still doesn't work, (and that broadcast address probably won't have done anything) I have a suspicion that although you have a router in the ADSL, your actual gateway might be the ISP. I don't know. Try it. You will probably have to make sure that you have a default route. (use the 'route' command, and see what it says.)

46700 2002-05-02 05:17:00 Thanks Mike and Graham.

I had not read that NET HOWTO but it's gone and cleared up a lot of things now and it's shown me where some of the configuration files I need to edit are located.

Thanks again,

KK
