| 46697 | 2002-05-01 15:02:00 | I have been looking through the howto for relevant information to connect to the internet via my ADSL/Router. The modem is connected to the ISP already I just need to specify the gateway and set up all connections to go through the gateway. The gateway (ADSL router) is 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 My computers IP that I made static is 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0 When setting it up I was also asked about network and broadcast. I set the network as 192.168.1.0 and the broadcast as 255.255.255.255 is that correct? I have no idea what this is and I didn't do this when setting it up in Windows. Now in Windows I just use the autodetect settings under the LAN in Linux I don't know where to begin. I read the DSL howto but this was way over my head. I hope someone can help. I have no idea where to begin. |

It should be 192.168.1.255 . You will need to make your ISP's DNS your DNS address. If it still doesn't work, (and that broadcast address probably won't have done anything) I have a suspicion that although you have a router in the ADSL, your actual gateway might be the ISP. I don't know. Try it. You will probably have to make sure that you have a default route. (use the 'route' command, and see what it says.) |
