46957 2002-05-03 09:40:00 I recently got a brand new comp and built it from scratch, an Athlon 1.3 Ghz with Win 98.
All was going swimmingly for a while until something went wrong with the main drivers and I had to re-install them and then ALL the programs on my computer stopped working.

It was still pretty fresh so I wasn't too bothered about re-installing everything. After that 2 programs still didn't work. ICQ and DAP (Download Accelarator plus)

DAP said it was having a problem with olepro32.dll - I extracted this from the 98 CD and all was sweet.
ICQ, however, gave me this message:

ICQ caused an exception c06d007eH in module MFC42.DLL at 016f:5f45388b.

I did many things in many different orders one by one. The most recent was when I did everything I could think of all in oner:

Uninstalled ICQ.
Used a reg cleaner to delete anything to do with it.
Used a manual reg editor to delete anything left over by marlibous software.
Extracted the said dll file.
Deleted the downloaded file and put downloaded it all over again.
Re-installed it and still the same error came up again.
I've been at this for days now.
Please don't say I have to format the whole thing a third time - everything else works fine, and ICQ worked fine for days before this happened.

That error message comes up right at the start. When the program icqsrp attemts to access the internet. It makes no difference even when the firewall and anti-virus are turned off.

PLease help...

46958 2002-05-03 10:54:00 Try running System File Checker just to see if there is a corrupt system file.

You can get to it via Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Information-Tools-System File Checker.

mfc42.dll seems to be one of those system files that gets loaded with a lot of programs, including I think ICQ.

It's possible that an older version has been installed by some other program and ICQ doesn't like it. Also make sure that there is only one in the system folder.
For reference, the version in my system folder is 6.00.8665.0, and Ive just installed the latest ICQ over the top of the previous one, following the instructions to be online whilst doing this.
Cheers

46959 2002-05-03 11:42:00 Tried that before, but did it again anyway just now. Same problem.

However - and this is quite interesting - did a search for the mfc42.dll file and came up with three:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
C:\Helpdesk\SFC
C:\Program files\DAP

DAP is of course, the other program that was having a problem, but on a differnet dll file.
Should I try re-installing both these two programs together? Or would the problem still occur?
Also - I'm not sure what the helpdesk directory is all about, I'm assuming thats a back up of the old mfc.dll from when I extracted it earlier.
Is it safe enough to delete that as well?
