47112 2002-05-04 10:39:00 I'm a bit of a late-comer to the music downloads thing and have only just installed WinMX.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but it doesn't seem worth it on dial-up. It was going to take over 60 mins to download something 8,083,899 bytes and that was one of the smaller files. Some of them are 17,197,196 bytes and that would take all night no doubt.

Anyone here do it on dial-up and if so, do you have any tips for a newbie please?

47114 2002-05-04 11:14:00 Jeez you missed the best bits. But all is not lost.

An average MP3 file compressed to 128K should be 3~5megs in total and take 10~30minutes to download. It is the way it is.

If you think thats sad. I have downloaded over 6000mp3s in the past 3years. Ever wondered why my phone was always engaged?

47115 2002-05-04 11:19:00 Really all depends on your internet connection status.

We've got a second phone line just for the internet. So I have absolutely no trouble downloading files that are a couple of hundred megabytes in size. Just leave it on over night.

If I know that other internet users are going to be out for the whole day, I'll leave it on for the day downloading.

PS. TIPS for p2p, watch for viruses. The .exe.js type files.

Limit the amount of people that can download from YOU.

There are some damn annying people that rename files as other names so you don't get what you want. Most annoying when you download 250MB to find it to be something else.

47116 2002-05-04 11:25:00 Hi there
I download HEAPS of music (teenage kids!)and do it all via a 56k modem.
Go to AG Satellite's website, download the app.(it's very small)that will enable you to download MP3 files - once you're up and running you can get 3 to 4 minute long songs in about 15 - 20 minutes, if your connection gets interrupted, the satellite will pick up where it left off next time you go on line.
If you need help on setting up the AG Satellite App, get back to me - nothing's a problem!
Cheers

47117 2002-05-04 11:25:00 most people are on dail up so go figure <sarcastic barstard>

its just the same as downloading a file off the net. some of mine take months due to the people not online when i'm online. mp3's are quite small so it no biggy just to let it sit for a night downloading. movies are a different ballgame. 3 days solid downloading or over 2 weeks on and off.

not to sure how fast winmx is but if you can find and select ones that have heaps of uses to download from makes it easier.

2nd phone line, unlimited account, a good UPS means 24/7 downloading ......yippee :)

to put it in perspective one song is 3-5 meg while updates for windows is 20-60meg.

47118 2002-05-04 12:30:00 yes it is a pain on dial up which is why i am on cable these days when you work out the cost of a 2nd line your isp costs etc it just makes good sense if you are a heavy user and are impatient like me if you want some mp3s 70s to 80s mp3s contact me tennisplayer43@hotmail.com Guest (0)
47119 2002-05-04 21:09:00 The story that I heard was that you were right up there with the play....must have been a rumour.

When Napster was still running good followed by a switch to AudioGalaxy, we were on 56k and downloaded enough music to fill in excess of 100 CD's.

As with Jetstart though, you are limited to the slowest upload. We had MP3's whipping down at 5k/sec and all down in under 10 minutes, other times it could be just 100bytes/sec and several hours later.

A second phone line or investment in jetstart would be the way to go if you can justify the cost.

Our first day with jetstart and there was 97 songs in 6 hours.

God I miss downloading MP3's.

47120 2002-05-04 21:47:00 Hello Susan,
If I may just add, when downloading mp3's I find one at a time helps, and download from cable, dsl, or T1 connections, should give you the song in about 10 - 12 minutes.

There is rubbish so pays to play the song as its downloading.

cheers,
Bob

47121 2002-05-04 22:06:00 My dial-up usually takes about 5 mins per meg, but if the site you're downloading from allows ftp then this is faster by about 20%. If the site doesn't do ftp, then I'll transfer the file to my off-shore server, usually at broadband speed, then ftp to my site and download it from there. Guest (0)
