2002-05-05 10:52:00 | well now where to start, not really that computer illiterate but here goes. When ever i switch the thing on whether i have any apps running or not itis rather slow. I mean slower than when i brought it 1.5 years ago. Every 3-4 minutes the thing justs seems to freeze for about 30 seconds or so. And away we go again for a few more minutes and on and on etc etc. Also i was sort of wondering if it is possible to run another o.s without partitioning the HDD. Because I'm prety PDDDD of with M.E and windows in general. Windows95 was no trouble way back then sorry I never kept the disks. dave.

2002-05-05 22:19:00 | Hello Dave, Your computer would have collected a lot of junk in 1.5 years and could be in need of a cleanout. There are four folders that can be cleaned out safely. Dont delete the folders, just whats inside them. These are Temp.internet, history, cookies, and temp. folder. The first two can be found in internet options, in the control panel, the last two in the windows folder. Lastly, a small free program tonys cleaner will clean out your registry, and unwanted files. Use this at your own risk though. good luck, Bob

2002-05-06 13:24:00 | Hi Dave, As with any OS you need to do regular maintenance on it. I dont know what you have been doing in the past, but a good starting point would be to use the built-in system. Go start/ programs/ acessories/ system tools/ maintenance wizard, and follow on screen instructions for cleaning out temp files etc., disk scan and defrag. It may take a while if you haven't done it before so fit it in while theres a good program on tele. Thereafter, try to do it weekly. It wont take very long if you do it on a regular basis. I am currently running XP Pro. Before that I had ME and it went very well compared to Win95 before that. Another good idea: When you have given it a clean up, go to a site called www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm and that will tell you which programs you do need and which ones you dont need running all the time. Its not unheard of to have 20-30 programs starting themselves up when you turn the computer on. If you go start/ run and type msconfig then hit the startup tab, you can see what you have running at startup. Then with the help of that site, you can disable the ones you dont need going all the time. Good luck and please get back to me if you need any further explanations. Cheers.

2002-05-07 06:04:00 | Hi Greame, Thanks for the info, I have cured most of the slow problems. Most of the problem was in the system tray, I had about 12 things running there and the CD Wtiter plugged in. So I unplugged the writer and exitted all but 5. Could not shut off the volume,hp cd writer and left AVG anti virus,Zone Alarm, Memory zipper plus on. Before I shut all that down the memory in the zipper program shot up to 103 straight away. Befor that it was jumping up and down from 0 to 83 in a matter of 30 seconds or so. But now great, I will go to that site soon, I had already cleaned the temp, internet temp folders out as well as all the damn cookies. I mean to say how the hell does on get to about 6000 cookies. I've now got appox Ram 109MB used, 81MB free, it seem to be all right now. I,ve got 191 MB of Ram. Cheers Dave.

After receiving the latest 'langalist' I folowed a link to his site and followed his directions on tweaking ME to get better performance etc. I can actually notice the difference in speed and pcpitstop says my puter has improved too. I suggest you give try. content.techweb.com |
