47254 2002-05-05 09:51:00 I have a computer installed with Windows XP Home, and the main partition, C:, was formatted as FAT32 by the manufacturers. The other partition I formatted into NTFS (as it was unformatted when we got it). Each partition is 18.6GB. I want to turn C: into an NTFS file system, but I don't want to erase any data. I looked up Help & Support, and it told me to type convert c: fs:ntfs at the command prompt, but I do not know if this will wipe all my data, as it says things like 'it will format that drive to NTFS', and in other parts that it won't erase any data.

So, would anyone know if the convert command wipes all data or just changes the file system while keeping everything in tact? Thanks.

47256 2002-05-06 13:07:00 Hi Daniel,

Why convert the Fat32 to NTFS? Why not convert the NTFS to Fat32?

I know NTFS is better for security, but fat32 is supposed to be quicker. Isn't NTFS security designed for networks?

I've only got one partition running XP Pro Fat32 and have seen that box saying that it can convert, was tempted for the hell of it, but like you, thought NO, I dont want to lose my data. It seems as though you wont. Interesting: Shall I or shant I? Will be curious to hear back from you after you've done it to see how it goes.

Cheers.

Convert Fat 32 to NTFS

I won't bore you with the details about the differences between NTFS and Fat32. You'll just have to trust me on this one. NTFS is faster and more secure than Fat32 is on larger drives. On smaller like sub 25Gb drives Fat32 is faster. NTFS's speed advantage only kicks in on higher capacity drives. There's a rather simple command that isn't very easy to find that will convert your FAT32 partition to NTFS. Open the command prompt by hitting start and then selecting run and type: 'Convert C: /FS:NTFS'. Replace C: with whatever the drive letter you'd like to convert is. Also make sure there is a space between the C: and the foward slash (/). Once you press enter it will ask you for confirmation and press Y. Then press Y and enter once more to reboot. It will take between one hour and 15 minutes to convert to NTFS. Now you can set passwords for files and use encryption. This also works for windows XP Home.

Cheers.
